I presume Mesalamine is 5-amino salicylic acid. So is asacol. This
drug has been used by many of our breastfeeding mothers with ulcerative
colitis without any appreciable problem in the baby. Since
breastfeeding may decrease the risk of ulcerative colitis, I would think
the mother would have a great interest in nursing. As far as the enema
is concerned I do not know this trade name, but I presume it has a
corticosteroid in it. It would be safe for breastfeeding. Perhaps it
contains other things, but I don't know.
