I would like to give a word of caution about oral rehydration recipes you
have been posting. Most of the one I have seen on the lactnet would give
children too much sugar and not enough sodium, potassium and bicarbonate.
Also you fail to mention that you should do this for only about 24 hours
and if not better it is essential to see a doctor. The smaller the child
the sooner a doc should be consulted.
I know that the rehydration solutions are somewhat expensive and dont
taste great. Thats because ther need to be only about 2% sugar and a fair
amount of salts including potassium. The solutions come in different
flavors. Not having the right balance of salt and sugar can not only not
be effective but may be dangerous if carried on (leading to more
dehydration and major salt imbalance in the blood). The World Health
Organization Solution (WHOsolution) was designed for rehydration, has
unlimited shelf life because the powder comes in a cannister and the
family adds the water themselves when needed. It is available for free
via most health deparment clinics. If you would like some more info about
oral
rehydration let me know.
