Dr. Jack's reply to the question regarding herion helped me recall a phone
call with a mother some years ago. I was making follow-up calls to BF moms
on WIC. I called for a mom who was not home at the time and ask the woman
who had answered the phone to let the mother know that I had called. When
she learned I was a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, she asked if she could ask
me a question about BF. I don't even remember the question, just a general
BFing question. Then, she started telling me about how much she loved BFing
and how much she LOVED her baby. She went on to tell me that this was her
fourth baby and she was a long time cocaine addict. She lost custody of the
first three children years ago. This was the first of her babies she had BF.
She told me how much she believed the BFing was what had helped her to feel
true maternal love, something she had never felt. Her baby was eight months
old and she had been clean since a few months before the baby was born. She
was even working at restoring her relationship with her other children and
looking forward to soon having custody restored. Her story was so
heartwarming and is a testiment to the power of breastfeeding.
Warmly,
Pat Lindsey, IBCLC, LLLLeader in private practice in Central Florida
