Hi All,
Happy New Year!
Now for a few questions.
RE: Pumps
We have a NICU nurse who is telling one of our WIC moms (who has a premie and
a low milk supply) that the Lactina pump she is using is the cause of her low
supply. (Mom came to us on day 10 with no pumping, and is only pumping 6
times a day, you all are thinking what I am I am sure...). This person told
this mom that she had to have the Medela Classic in order to get her supply
up (mom is also on Reglen, which I have need for info on) and that the
Classic had a 2/3 greater suction power than the Lactina. Well, I know this
is hogwash, but we are now in need of good literature (preferrably from
Medela, Richard Weston are you out there???) that disproves this info.
Also, as I said before this mom is on Reglen to increase her supply. I don't
know the doseage, but she has been on it for quite a while (at least 3
weeks). She has seen minimal improvements in her supply, but enough to
convince her to continue taking it. Problem comes in that the Dr who
prescribed it told her that Reglen has NO side effects! This mom used to be
really nice and easy to talk to (for our counselor). Mom is now exhibiting
some of the side effects we see with Reglen, combative, depressed, etc. She
is also being compromised by a particular NICU nurse who is telling her that
the WIC counselor should not be talking with her, and that the WIC doesn't
know a thing about premies and long term puming. We are currently taking
steps to correct the problem with this particular nurse (we have friends in
high places that she doesn't know about!) and hopefully will not have this
type of problem again.
What we need is written evidence of the side effects of Reglen in the nursing
mom (what can happen to her specifically) and info on the pumps (Classic vs
Lactina pumping pressure and effectiveness of milk supply for long term
pumping).

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks all! You are great!
Jay
Who just realized that she is really on maternity leave, but can't stay out
of the fray. Life would be too boring otherwise! Just made my supervisor
promise to keep me updated on all the good stuff going on at WIC (the BF
cases that is, not the politic garbage).
