I have used metoclopramide a few times for low milk supply with some
success. Usually the best success is in the working mom with a three to
four month old who just "can't quit keep up." I too had heard the
concern over depression so make it a point to talk to the mom about this
prior to going through with the metoclopramide.

I had an experience last July where I was asked by a husband (who just
happened to be on of the hospital's OB nurse anestetists) to do a home
visit for with his wife who was just home from her cesarean birth. She
was a little engorged and having a little difficulty with latch on.
While I was there, they mentioned her obstetrician had put her on
metocolopramide for nausea. It occurred to me that the engorgement
issue might be aggravated by the med so I told them of the use of it for
low milk supply and suggested she might want to stop taking it if
possible. They agreed and said the nausea was no big deal, she hadn't
needed but a couple doses. Well.... two days later, the husband was
calling me because his wife had started having extreme symptoms of
depression, actually more like phychosis. She had quite a time with it
for several months. I have always wondered if just a couple of doses of
metoclopramide had induced the PPP or was just a fluke coincidence. But
you can believe I have been very careful to try all other methods of
increasing milk supply before suggesting metoclopramide. I too would
like to hear of other experiences.
