The question about breastfeeding and carpal tunnel ties right in with what I
want to ask. My daughter (unmarried, not a mother) had surgery last week
for thumb tendinitis (DeQuervain's Syndrome). When she went to Physical
Therapy this week, the therapist mentioned that they see this often in new
mothers who are breastfeeding. At the Clinic where she went (connected to
one of the major medical centers in the US), they said they see about one
mother a month who has this condition due to breastfeeding and the way they
press with their thumb against the breast.
I've been a LLLL for over 30 years and had never been aware of this. Is it
really all that common? Is it due to wrong positioning? Should we be
"warning" mothers about this? Have any of you experienced this in your
clients/patients/mothers?
