Just a note about this issue of giving out our email addresses to parents
wanting counseling. I have a problem with it. As I have written before,
counseling over the net is like phone counseling without the opportunity for
real-time feedback. It does not allow for me to make sure how the parent is
processing the information, to ask enough followup questions, and most
importantly, it doesn't allow me to LOOK at the situation. If people have
enough of a problem to need an LC, in my opinion they have gone past the
point where information alone will be sufficient. (That is unless they are
asking for a research article or something.) But even drug questions need
followup: What other drugs are you taking? what do you weigh? How old is
baby? etc. It gets complicated and I believe there are liability risks.

But beyond that, I work very long days, and it is an intrusion into my free
time to be asked to continue to work (for free) during what I feel is a time
I have carved out of my schedule for stimulating recreation in the form of
discussion of our work with colleagues. So please, if you are tempted to
give out my address for such purposes, run it by me first.
Thanks,
Barbara
