Donna - I wonder how your friend's friend's twins drink OTHER drinks?
Presumably they are having SOME other foods and liquids if they are a year
old? However, if they are refusing all other milks other than breastmilk
maybe there is a reason, like potential allergy? These sound like very
smart, normal babies! If the mother has breastfed her babies for a whole
year already she is obviously committed to giving them "the best", and maybe
she could be helped to see that the small "inconvenience" of them lifting
her shirt and trying to nurse when out in public is outweighed by the very
real benefits of being able to feed and comfort two babies at once by
continued breastfeeding.

My twin boys "officially" weaned at just over 4 years of age (and had
"unofficial" comfort-nursings for a little longer) and I often wonder if
they would have weaned a little earlier had they been singletons because -
yes - if one forgot, the other would remember, and of course neither could
be left out! However, I wouldn't have missed this truly unique experience
for the world. The sheer convenience of being able to nurse two little ones
at the breast simultaneously, for food, snackies, any-time pick-me-ups, when
they got sick, and to snuggle them off to sleep after a busy day (it took 5
minutes and they were zonked!) is something that saved my sanity (and was a
fabulous experience!) for several years. I chose to limit public nursing
because there is no way you can be discreet with twin toddlers, and we
developed an innocuous "code-word" for nursing. Do urge your friend's
friend to re-think this, the benefits of carrying on are ENORMOUS!
