Dear Friends,
Yesterday my son and I viewed an exhibit of photographs by Yosuke Yamahata,
who was a young military photographer in the Japanese army at the end of
WWII. The photos are all taken within 24 hours of the atomic bombing. The
relevance to Lactnet is in one heartstopping photo. After wincing at picture
after picture of burn victims and general devastation, there is a photo of a
mother with burns on her cheek nursing a badly burned baby, gazing with all
her love in her eyes in the midst of this unspeakable horror. I've never
seen anything like this.
I saw this exhibit at Kansas State University. I'm not sure if this is a
traveling exhibit, but if you ever get a chance to see these photos, don't
miss it and don't forget the tissues--you'll need them! I couldn't get that
photo out of my mind, more than all the others. I knew you'd understand.
