I thought many of you would be interested in a publication just made
available on nutrition action themes for the US. The USDA has just issued a
report responding to the commitment made by the 159 participating countries
at the 1992 International Conference on Nutrition (ICN). The report sets
forth the plans made to improve nutrition for the US. Seven priority areas
were identified-- promoting breastfeeding is listed as number five. This is
an important report and can be used by anyone involved in nutrition programs
and in documenting that breastfeeding needs to be addressed in Title V
grants, hospital breastfeeding policies, etc. It is almost like a beginning
of a national breastfeeding policy.
You can order it from

All other participating countries should have some type of report like this.
Outside of the US, Lactnetters should check their national health
department/ministry for their response to the ICN to see if breastfeeding is
listed as a priority.
ILCA representatives were at this meeting in Rome and had direct input into
this meeting regarding the importance of breastfeeding. Obviously someone was
listening. Good job!!
