Hi, with respect to the article by Kay Motil, which was done at the
Children's Nutrition Research Center in Houston -- a very breastfeeding
friendly place -- my understanding is the articles in the popular press put
a different spin on Dr. Motil's research than her paper did.  I really think
courtesy dictates reading the original research and seeing what the woman
has to say before assuming she is an enemy.  I am sensitive to this, because
people who didn't even read my article on nipple shields called me to say
they hadn't read it but just wanted to let me know what a rat I was for even
discussing the subject.  Scientific discussion ought to be open and
objective.  There ought to be room for us to present what we discover when
we do honest research.  As the post on the slender mother with delayed
lactogenesis II demonstrates, sometimes there are factors (dietary?
maternal energy stores depleted? etc) which can influence milk production.
We need to know MORE not LESS about these factors.  If we shoot every
messenger who dares to explore the down side, how are we going to have
information to develop strategies to handle the "zebra" cases?  That's the
kind of cases LCs see.  The normal moms don't need us.
