I believe the issue of LCs taking fees stems from the fact that most of us did start
out as volunteer peer counselors with organizations such as LLL or the Childbirth
Trust. And most of the public (at least here) is unaware that professional LCs
even exist. Training is $$$ - especially for those of us overseas who need to
import materials and travel abroad to attend seminars. In addition, I have to pay
V.A.T. (like sales tax for those of you in the U.S.) and income tax just like
everyone else. I don't see doctors, dentists or vets making apologies for trying
to make a living. I feel I charge very fair rates considering the amount of time
and effort I invest in every mother. A first visit can last 2 hours. (If a client
goes to her gyn, he'll see her for 15 minutes and charge her more than double.)
My rates include telephone calls between visits. The parents who complain the most
are usually the ones that spend a bundle on microwave sterilizers, baby bed alarms,
automatic swings and so forth. If the parents are really in financial difficulty,
I charge them a token fee (to preserve their dignity.) I would never turn away
a mom just because she couldn't afford counseling. It's important to have a price
list in clear view in the LC's office - or in her briefcase if she makes housecalls
- so there are no surprises. It also helps to patiently explain the difference
between a professional and volunteer counselor.

Happy Chanukah from Israel to all those celebrating.

Susan
