In ABM News and Views, the Newsletter of the Academy of Breastfeeding
Medicine, 1996, Volume 2, Number 2, P 2, Dr. Frank Greer has an excellent
review of the subject of vitamin K and breastfeeding. He states: "The only
breastfed infants at significant risk for hemorrhagic disease of the
newborn are those who have associated malabosorptive disorders...or those
who did not receive the intramuscular injection of vitamin K at the time of
birth.. These are the only infants at the present time who need additional
supplements of vitamin K." There is no evidence that exclusively breastfed
infants are at any risk of hemorrhagic disease.
