When I was younger and childless, I helped other women to breastfeed
because it was what I thought was to be done. Not many other physicians
would do it (except my role model, of course), but, being a bit
rebellious (reading "spiritual midwifery") and poetic, I thought it was OK.
Then, I studied public health, and was confirmed into the necessity of
doing it. Now, being sort of out of public health, but into primary care,
I really realize that the private mds have no time (nor, unfortunately,
the competence in many instances) and I feel it should be done. Having
breastfed my kids helps an awful lot, as I rely on written information as
well as experience. It just needs to be done ! It is irresponsible to
tell women that breast is best, then let them down when trouble arises.
Basics of health promotion. But not understood here in the public health
department ...
