Linda, Apologies for replying several days later, and I imagine others have
sent you replies and I haven't read them yet as I am working through the days
in chronological order. First, I would suspect thrush, based on something Dr
Newman has pointed out several times. Not seeing white spots in the baby's
mouth does not mean it is not candidiasis. The clue for me would be the
sudden onset of painful breastfeeding after having painless breastfeeding;
the fact that the mother is on antibiotics and the fact the she describes her
nipples as being a little pinker. I would also want to consider if in fact
she was pregnant. I know you mentioned that she was menstruating, but it
wasn't a regular cycled thing yet. I think I would suggest a three day
course of gentian violet and see if it improves. I'll be interested in
finding out what it turns out to be.

Kathleen Bodden, in Toronto.
