Today I got a call from a mom who is nursing a 6 week old. Things have been
going well, but she was told she needed to give the baby formula because she
(mom) is anemic, and since she(mom) has sickle cell trait, her milk would not
have enough iron in it, and the baby would need iron from formula.
I understand that sickle cell trait is NOT sickle cell anemia, and wonder where
this information he gave to her came from? I did a little reading on sickle
cell anemia however and wondered if there is any information out there on moms
with sickle cell anemia wit regards to their breastfeeding? Couldn't find it in
Lawrence.
Opinions? She asked if she could take extra iron and he told her it wouldn't
help.
