Here is a WHO recipe for ORT. I obtained it while studying at UCLA from
Mrs. Patrice Jelliffe, who along with her husband performed some of the
very first field studies on ORT for the WHO.

The WHO recommendations include, in addition to using ORT solutions, to
*continue breastfeeding*. BFing is *part* of the therapy, for babies
lucky enough to be nursing. Re: measurements: Mrs. Jelliffe had us
"practice" correct measurements by using "pinch of salt" "handful of
sugar" and then weighing our pinches or handfuls on the gram scale until
we were fairly accurate. (Very inexpensive yet accurate gram scales can
be obtained through science and educational teaching supply stores). For
example, my fingers can only grab 1/3 of the required amount of salt, so
the correct recipe for my own hands would be amended to "3 pinches of
salt". A HCP with a gram scale can easily teach this kind of adaptation
of the recipe working 1-to-1 with mothers. Alternately, find small
"measuring devices" that will work. My UCLA class came up with soda
bottle caps, nutshell halves, small halved gourds or coconuts, you get
the idea. Then, the recipe would be adapted (example (not real): "4
coconut halves of water, 6 bottlecaps of sugar, etc") For the recipes
already posted which measure by quantity not weight, I believe the (tea-
and table-) spoon measurements are all *level* spoonfuls. This is
important in ORT.

WHO ORT Recipe:
1 Liter drinking water
20 grams dextrose (or glucose)
1.5 grams KCl (potassium chloride)
3.5 grams NaCl  (sodium chloride)(table salt)
2.5 grams NaHCO3 (sodium bicarbonate)(bicarbonate of soda or baking
soda)

Mix in a clean container until dissolved.

Use of this recipe should only be under direct order and supervision of
physician or trained health care practitioner.
