Yes, we have gone around and around with this issue. I have gotten many
calls in regards to this the past several years. For a normal newborn, one
can collect breast milk in any containter that is best and easiest for her
and her baby. Some of the polyethlene, plastic bags are not made
specifically for freezing breast milk, just like comparing the baggies to
freezer bags that we use for freezing meats, vegies, etc. Medela CSF bags do
have an ester in them that protects the milk against oxygenation, "freezer
burns". They have been designed to freeze breast milk. As far as the sour
or soapy taste/smell, it is due to the break-down of fats, or it can also be
due to other items in the freezer and I have even seen some due to what
mother has eaten. It does not matter what container she stores her milk in.
They all do the same thing. I have done lots of experimenting around.
Hopefully, we can get some research done on some of this. Do you hear me
Dr. Larry Gartner????? I will be calling you.
