Hi Marilee,

You wrote,

responding to the thread of non-compressable nipples perhaps in response to
extra fluids from pitocin or IV. Something that has been helpful is herbal
baths. There are different recipes. The one I used myself and recommend is a
handful of each: comfrey, shepherd's purse, uva ursi; several cloves of
garlic chopped up(not necessary to peel). Pour boiling water over, steep
for
a half hour or more. Strain into bath and add a handful of sea salt. It is
wonderfully healing to the perineum and will reduce edema. >>

This is nice, but we are seeing the problem in hospital less than 24 hours
after delivery, and often mom has ended up with a C/Section so will be there
three days. Would this work as a compress over the breasts (should one be
able to even make it...???)

Also, can someone recommend a GOOD book on herbs which lists dosage, use and
side effects as well as toxic dosages? I'm concerned that we may willy nilly
use herbal treatments on moms for assorted ailments without regard to the
possible effect on the babies,. and I'd like a definitive. authoritative
source to give me some guidelines on that.

Tom -- are you lurking? Would you like to write another book? This could be
your "blue book" in companion to your "red book." Yes???
