I wrote a couple of weeks ago about a lady I'm seeing regularly who has
post-natal depression, and the baby lost weight (at 12 weeks) when she tried
her first week of all breastfeeds - she ended up very distressed and said
that she wasn't game to stop breastfeeding despite the overwhelming problems
she was experiencing because of the benefits of breastfeeding I'd told her
about. And I felt very guilty. You remember?
Saw her last week - baby gained well on about two thirds formula, and mother
and baby were both very happy. My suggestion for the following week was to
offer the breast then a comp afterwards and to continue like that as long as
he will keep going to the breast (not feeling very hopeful). Anyway she
came back in today, looking happy - baby had an excellent weight gain again
and baby is only breastfed midnight to midday, then comped after feeds after
lunch. She's giving less than half of his requirements as formula. I was
just so pleased and delighted with her - and she was pretty pleased with
herself too. Thought I'd let you all know how she'd going.
Thankyou very much to those of you who 'counselled' me when I was feeling
pretty bad about this case - it really did help me.

it could be.
