Time for an update...HB31 (intended to protect a woman's right to
breastfeed in public) is moving along quickly!
A group including members of Nursing Mothers, Inc of Delaware, La Leche
League, WIC, 2 IBCLCs, and many of you in spirit, attended a meeting of
the House Health & Human Development Committee. The Bill was introduced
by its author. Another representative talked about the value of
breastfeeding to her and her premature son. Another representative
asked the author if the wording was clear enough and broad enough that
it would truly achieve the desired effect. His answer was a yes.
The Chair then asked for a representative of the breastfeeding community
to speak. In my 5 minutes or less I highlighted the Healthy People 2000
Breastfeeding Goals and HB 31 as a support to achieving them. I also
encouraged DE to become the 13th state to enact such legislation. As I
retold the experiences Terriann Shell and I had at the Holocaust Museum,
several committee members jaws dropped in amazement. I managed to note
that while I was at the Museum, Iwas nursing my son "as discretely as I
have been nursing my daughter here". (Her 8 week old twin sister slept
in someone else's arms.)
The Bill was unanimously approved and "released from the Committee". I
arrived home to a message that it goes before the full house on Thursday
afternoon!
Thanks you for your continuing support. Will keep you posted!
