So far the posts on nursing older adoped babies have been great. My 2
cents worth to add would be to do LOTS of skin-to-skin contact, but in a
gradual way. Obviously, this isn't going to be comfortable for everyone
and not every baby has an appropriate background. However, even in the
case of sexually abused children, there is significant need for
unconditional love that gives lots of non-sexual hugging. Paying
attention to the child's cues is vital. Many families have found that the
first step to increasing the contact comfortably is through reading with
the child on their lap and through the use of a family bed or co-sleeping.
Others have found that bath time is a good time for this. They do these
step by step and ease their way into whichever method to get baby to
breast.
