HI Nofia!
I really enjoy your posts!
Now that author has an interesting case to make! THat bottle feeding has
caused a rise in homosexuality because of a lack of attachment to mother.
 Interesting...
The one thing that I do know as far as gay men are concerned is that their
homosexuality is a genetic thing, having to do with the makeup with a
particular part of the brain. As far as lesbians, I don't know. The key
question about the gay male would be WHEN did the faulty growth of the brain
occur (the part that causes the gayness)? Is it truly a genetic thing (some
might call it a defect), or was it the result of not getting specific
nutrients/amino acids etc., from mothers milk that are not available in
formula? Now there would be a good study!
I can see it now: If scientists could prove that breastfeeding could prevent
homosexuality, what would the formaula companies do? Some people, who would
normally be against BF for whatever dumb reason, would be so scared of their
children ending up gay (homophobia, also rather silly IMHO) that they would
BF just to prevent that! "Nevermind the higher IQ's and all the other
benefits of BF, just don't let my kid be gay!"
Anyway, I also had a conversation with a friend who pointed out to me what
Maureen had mentioned about lesbians and BF. The fact that in a hetero
couple the only one capable of BF the baby is the woman, but in a lesbian
couple there are two sets of breasts available for possible lactation. While
some would love to have their partner share in the BF and the partner would
like to, there are other couples who would be threatened by that possiblilty,
and the partner may not want to BF. We had a lesbian couple as clients at
WIC almost a year ago. The mother of the babies (she had twins, boy and
girl) had only one breast (lost to breast cancer). Needless to say she was
not able to produce enough milk to sustain both babies. Also the babies were
highly allergic to dairy, and they had a lot of problems with finding a
formula they could not only afford, but that the babies would tolerate. We
suggested the idea of relactaion to the partner (Who had BF her son 8 yrs
prior), but she was NOT interested. She was not interested in even nursing
the babies at breast (in other words, being a pacifier for the babies) or
using an SNS at breast. We kinda thought it was a waste of resources ;) but,
it was her decision. Thinking back to that couple, made me remember a few
things.
So I still don't think that being a lesbian has anything to do with how you
view the breast in regards to BF, but I can easily see where being a lesbian
with a partner and a baby could present problems. The mother would NOT be
the only one capable of feeding the baby at breast, and that might be
somewhat disconcerting and threatening. Then again, she may enjoy the fact
that someone else could take over for her! Also, one other thing to think
about here. No 2 sets of breasts are alike, and the babies would have to
learn how to BF on each different set. Another possiblilty of nipple
confusion??? How would the birth mother feel if her baby decided s/he liked
the other mommy's breast better than hers? I can see the problems with that!
Anyway, studies and research would be great, as long as they were done on an
appropriate level, and not used as some form of discriminatory basis to
threaten lesbian moms with losing their kids if they BF.
I know that none of us would ever do a study like that that would ultimately
harm someone or a group of someones. So maybe a few of us could do a bit of
lite research, a question answer thing for the gay community. Any ideas?
MAybe we could get a questionaire together and several of us from around the
world can contact the gay population in our towns and see what we come up
with! I'd be game for that! I could do that here in Sacramento.
Any takers?
Jay
Always ready to take on more than she should! :D
