I posted about a mom breastfeeding a 14-month old whose spouse wanted long (8-hour) unsupervised visits. The dad's lawyer entered a motion trying to get the judge to order the mom to wean so dad could have longer visits. I met at length with my client's lawyer, with tons of references, and clued him in on the facts of toddler nursing and developmental needs. Then I showed up at the courthouse on behalf of the mom, and just my presence was apparently effective. The dad's lawywer backed off and accepted more frequent, but still only 3-4 hour visits with the toddler. Turns out the magistrate is a divorced dad who was sensitive to breastfeeding issues because his kid nursed till 2 1/2 years with gradually increasing length of visits. The toddler still falls apart after visits, but not as badly as after the 8-hour visit ordered on Thanksgiving day. The trial is in February. Keep your files of policy documents handy - you never know when you'll need them.
