Anne: I just stumbled across a great reference in the Nutrition text I use
for teaching undergrads that says it is absolutely horrible to give juice
or ANY sugary drink/syrup to babies (or adults) with diarrhea. The
rationale is that glucose in the intestines throws of the osmotic balance,
forcing the intestines to draw water out of the blood stream and re-balance
the osmotic pressure gradient. This in turn makes the diarrhea worse and
dehydrates the body!!! Wait till I get this in print to those doctors who
insist on taking babies off bm and giving them peach juice syrup!!!
