>> As far as bad habits go, make sure the baby is fully awake before offering to feed.<<
One of the often heralded benefits of breastfeeding, *for the entire
family* is the fact that at night when baby is hungry or scared or
lonely or whatever, he simply needs to whimper and mom is there to nurse
him, with little or no interuption to anyone's sleep- including mom's.
Since breastfeeding is FAR more that simply a feeding method, this to me
is simply part of "mothering through breastfeeding." IMHO I would not
insist that my baby be fully awake before offering too nurse
him. That would also wake up his daddy and his sleepy brothers and
sisters!
If it is any comfort- my now grown children- (well, ages 17 and 13)
sleep all night every night and have for years. They moved out of the
family bed at around age 4-6. No bad sleep habits here- except their
mom's bad habit of saving all her general worrying for the middle of the
night herself... BTIWB (But then, I wasn't breastfed...)
