As a former masters swimmer/marathoner I too was anxious to
get back to exercising soon after delivery. Swimming was not an
option because of childcare, but running with a jogging stroller
seemed to be a good solution. After the birth of my first daughter,
I began walking at two weeks and running 4 miles at eight weeks. I was
cautious about running too soon on loose joints and excess weight
since I gained 50 lbs. during my pregnancy (one of my blunt friends
said, "It must be a real shock to you to be fat after having that
nice swimmer's body"). I lost all the weight in four months, felt
fine, and had plenty of milk. After the birth of my second daughter,
I resumed walking at 5 days and running at ten weeks (same weight
gain the second time around, but it took a little longer to lose it.
Interestingly, Jane Heinig of UC Davis
and co-author of the DARLING study has found that the endurance
athletes she's studied actually produce more milk than the
non-athletic mothers.
As for whether one should run before or after nursing, that's really
up to mom and baby. I always nursed my daughters right before
running. It's uncomfortable to run with full breasts (invest in a
good jogging bra, too!), and a baby with a full tummy is likely to
be happy and fall asleep in the jogging stroller. For the first few
months, both girls were ready to nurse again after an hour, so I'd
nurse them right when we got home from running also. Neither one
seemed to mind that I was sweaty.

A note on the vanilla scented pacifiers: some time ago there was a
discussion on Lactnet about the taste of breastmilk. At that time I
asked my then three and a half year old what breastmilk tasted like
to her. Her answer: "Melted vanilla ice cream."
