I have seen this problem for years now and have noticed it particularly in
precipitous births and c section babies. These babies are either born very
quickly and are not squeezed for as long or not at all.
One of the two babies I worked with last Friday, who is 4 days old now is still
gagging, although he is nursing better. Mom is taking him to pediatrician
tomorrow because she is still afraid he will choke. Most of the ones I see
clear up in a day or two without treatment or instantly with a tummy wash. It
is interesting to think what people used to do for this, probably nothing, but
probably weren't as worried about charting some nursings before discharge
either.
