The full name of ASPO is ASPO/Lamaze, shortened from the American Society for Psychoprophylaxis in Obstetrics. ASPO was the first US organization to provide a certification program for childbirth educators. Those certified can use the title "ACCE" which means "ASPO-Certified Childbirth Educator." If you pay an extra fee, you can join the College of Childbirth Educators and use FACCE, or "Fellow, American College of Childbirth Education" after your name. They've recently re-designed the program, which was pretty good to begin with and seems to be even more valid now. I learned a lot in the preparation for certification - it was well worth the time and money, IMHO.

(Fellow? for a mostly-female constituency working with birthing women? I never did get that one.)
