Regarding Kathleen Bruce's post about the morbidly obese mom having
trouble getting close to baby for nursing. I assume that in essence, her
arms aren't long enough so she needs to nurse without having to hold the
baby. What about upside down side-lying nursing (mom and baby both lay on
their sides but the baby's feet point toward mom's head?) I would imagine
that her upper body/shoulders have less girth and might allow her to be
physically and visually closer to her baby. There is also over the shoulder
nursing where the mom lies on her back while baby lies on his stomach on a
pillow and attaches to breast over the shoulder. Barbara Heiser's nipple
sandwich might help if the mom is dealing with a lot of breast tissue. Her
instructions and diagrams are in LLLI's The Breadtfeeding Answer Book. The
positions I mentioned are also in there. I would be interested in learning
what works for this mother.
