I think it is probably a good idea to get in touch with the doctor.
Alternatively the mother could ask these very specific questions.
There are several issues here that need to be clarified.
In terms of the mother- breastfeeding
will help her to loose weight, there are probably blood-pressure meds
that are compatible (haven't looked), regular RD consultations will speed
weight loss etc. Just how high is her blood pressure now? Is it really
high enough to justify extreme measures? What is the risk to the
mother of slightly slower weight loss? Is she on a regular
aerobic exercise program like walking or swimming?
In terms of the baby- There are long term consequences to the
baby's health associated with ABM. Some of the info in Marsha Walker's
article on the risks of artificial infant feeding is probably in order
here, as well as any references that you can share about the association
of ABM feeding with later diabetes, obesity etc. Is the pediatrician
breastfeeding friendly? Perhaps a comment about the advisability of
breastmilk for the baby from ped would also help.
I would certainly want to be sure about all of these
before planning a relactation program.
