Pat D. I have a lot of articles about NIDCAP and orig arts by H. Als.
NIDCAP is the Neonatal Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program.
Dr. Als hypothesized that the preterm infant is not an immature full-term.
The preterm infant is well equiped for where he is supposed to be-inside the
womb. The problem comes when the preterm infant is put in another
environment-the NICU.

One of the interesting points is that the infant inside is in flexion and
has confining boundaries until delivery. The premie-outside- is basically
in extension with no boundaries. Gravity and the premie's lack of muscle
tone even promote extension. So a lot of the interventions have to do with
promoting flexion and making boundaries. This system of care is very
compatible with kangarooing.

A lot of research has also been done on the bright lights and noise in the NICU.

There are a lot of articles in a journal called Neonatal Network. Other
names for this theory are "Synactive Theory of Development" or developmental
care if you do a search.

Als, H. (1982). Toward a synactive theory of development: Promise for the
assessment and support of infant individuality. Infant Mental Health
Journal, 3(4), 229-243.

Another interesting factoid - Dr. Als originally worked with Dr. Brazelton

Training is given so this system can be implemented in any NICU. Lots of
nurses have taken it and many NICU's use the theories.
