Regarding the discussion over soda's leaching out calcium...it is not the
soda per se that does this; it's the phosphorus in some of them. It is a
physiological fact that one's body attempts to keep serum levels of Calicum
and Phosphorus in a two to one ratio. When you increase the serum
Phosphorus, it signals the body to draw Calcium out of your bones. Some
sodas do not have large amounts of Phosphorus (It is used to create that
tart taste in colas). This all of course avoids the issue of caffeine and
its effects, but that's another story. If a mom wants to drink soda--diet
or otherwise--with Phosphorus, then she needs to substantially increase her
Ca intake. Many biochemists I know swear by extra strength Tums (4 per
day) for this purpose. Other more holistic people say it's better to get
your Ca either through foods or "whole food supplements" like Alfalfa
capsules. In either case, many Calcium supplements sold as such are not
readily digested or absorbed, and there is also an issue of getting too
many heavy metals.
I hope this clarifies some confusion and doesn't lose anyone. I
teach women's health and nutrition and find that most women want to know
this info.
