Thank you Carolyn for throwing some light on a paradox I sometimes see and
find so hard to understand that I've doubted my own perceptions - I've seen
mothers who have had a long on-going battle with infertility (ten years in
one case) exhibit a sort of coldness and off-handedness to their babies, and
appear to be so wrapped up in their own physical well-being that they may
actually neglect their babies' needs for food, warmth and comfort.  They
invariably abandon breastfeeding within the first week.  They seem kind of
sad and angry.  Thanks for giving some of the reasons why.
