Hi, All: There have been several recent postings about colic and its
possible relationship with several items ingested by mothers, including
but not limited to cruciferous vegetables, chocolate, cow's milk and
Nutrasweet (aspartame). All I've ever seen were results of retrospective
studies or anecdotal evidence. Does anyone know of any prospective
studies in which various items were ingested, symptoms were observed to
improve, and then the item/items were reintroduced with or without
recurrence of symptoms?
Since colic is sometimes overdiagnosed, and when present is self-limited
anyway (i.e. the symptoms may have gone away even if the "offending
product" were not removed), and as I previously mentioned colic is
present to the same degree in ABM-fed babies where the above products are
not a factor, I have some real concerns about prescribing diet
restrictions to mothers based on the evidence so far presented. Although
I agree that in individual cases a particular "foodstuff" may be
causative, I hesitate to label foods as "colic-producing", thereby placing
one more barrier in mothers' decision about infant feeding. Reactions?
Do I feel a study coming on? Alicia. [log in to unmask]
