Jane Bradshaw,
In a message dated 96-10-29 00:05:11 EST, you write:
<< Laurie, and all others, when counseling a mother with kidney disease about
her drugs and breastfeeding, please realize this is not a simple infection,
or a self limiting disease. Please any of you who are involved with mothers
with serious conditions, find
out more about their medical conditions before you advise they even think
about delaying treatment or suggesting she change doctors. I know you know
breastfeeding, but when situations like this come up you must do a lot of
homework before you advise the mother, especially to delay treatment.>>
Jane, I understand your passion about this topic and I don't know if your
post was directed to me - because I did post a response to Jay (I think) who
had a mom with kidney disease asking about meds. But if it was, I'd like to
clarify. I did not save the post, but I think I posted that the mom should
ask something like a) is the tx needed b) could the tx be delayed c) could an
alternate be found.
I think these are sound points to discuss with the MD before proceeding. If
the answers are a) yes b) no c) no , then mom should proceed wtih the
recommendations or she may want a second opinion before proceeding. I would
NEVER take it upon myself to advise someone to delay or refuse tx. LCs who
are not MDs should not practice medicine. Even if a mom calls about the
safety of a drug, I would give her info and refs and advise her to discuss
with her MD. But I do stand by my recommendations to get the full informed
consent prior to tx. That way everyone knows that bf truly needed to be
discontinued.
Respectfully,
Laurie Wheeler, Rnc, Mn, Ibclc
