In regard to the post from Pam Cawley regarding the woman in Reno, Nevada and
the comment that some "helpful" women told her about WIC and formula.
I believe that what the "helpful" women were trying to tell Mom is that
pregnant and breastfeeding women are eligible for WIC services themselves, in
addition to services for her baby when it is born. Mom will be eligible for
free, nutritious food and nutrition education during her pregnancy and for
one year following baby's birth if she continues to breastfeed. The baby
will be provided with vouchers for juice and infant cereal during the first
year at the appropriate time and then will receive vouchers for eggs, milk,
cheese, peanut butter, dried peas and beans, iron-fortified cereal, etc.
until he or she turns five or the mother's financial situation improves.
WIC is not about pushing formula anymore, as anyone from TX WIC who I see
here on LACTNET will tell you. It is the position of CA WIC that breastmilk
is the ideal form of infant nutrition and it is our desire that all WIC
mothers breastfeed.
The woman in Nevada will also receive free breastfeeding information and
support from the staff at her Nevada WIC agency, which should include bf
consultants, educators and/or RD's trained in breastfeeding.
Please encourage this mother to go to WIC for the assistance to which she is
entitled, so that she can be supported to breastfeed successfully, learn good
nutrition habits and receive free food. I'm sure that this would make the
money she gets from her mother go a lot further. She also should be
encouraged to contact the District Attorney's office in Reno to find out
about establishing child support from the ex or soon to be ex.
