Hi all,
Here's a ref you all might find interesting:
Cesarean Childbirth and Psychosocial Outcomes: a Meta-Analysis
Health Psychology (1996) Vol 15(4) 303-314
This journal is an official APA journal (american Psych association) so
ppl who don't want refs from BF journals can't turn up their nose. It is
a statistical analysis of articles found by a medline search from 1966
and health planning and administration (from 1975) and psychological abstracts
(from 1967) up to 1993 Dec. Sorry, an analysis of the results found in all
these articles that talk about psychosocial issues in childbirth. They look at
satisfaction with birth experience, incidence and length of BF!!! and
positive reactions to babies after birth, and other things. The main
findings are that following Csec moms are less satisfied with birth exp.
less positive about babies and MUCH less likely to BF. Of course this
is no suprise to any lactnetter, but still good amunition! They also
talk about how csec rate is higher amoung woman who have private insurance
and best of all, they reccomend in their discussion section that special
care be taken with csection moms to encourage BF since the incidence is
lower. The numbers: of 1000 births vaginally, 700 will BF, while after c-sec
only 440 of 1000 will BF.
Oops, I just noticed Iforgot the authors:MR DiMatteo, SC Morton,
HS Lepper TM Damush MF Carney, and M Pearson (interestingly, all are
women, I guess we had to wait for women to get to be researchers to get
these types of studies done, grrr)
I find this especially neat since it is such a pro BF and pro
mom article in an APA journal!!! Yea!
Hope you find this interesting
