While attending the BSC 6 day course in 1995 one of the instructors (Linda
Kutner) recommends mom use olive oil on their nipples. It has been around for
thousands of years and is safe. Later I also read that olive oil contains
vitamin E which helps condition skin. Now I recommend this over vitamin E
capsules which is a highly concentrated form of vitamin E that could be toxic
to the baby. I have personally used a homeopathic breast balm - Graphites
which has been effective too (if you buy this don't be surprised it is a
black colored cream, not very atrtactive but effective)
Toddler nursing certainly has its "painful" moments and rewards (I'm nursing
my 38 mo. old) If nursing Alex becomes painful, I release the latch and say
"open wide", then I open my mouth (like when you are spoon feeding a baby) he
opens and I can get a more comfortable position.
Good Luck!
