Denise- about 25 years ago I had a mom who had br surgery for abcess while
nursing her 1st baby. The surgery involved the lower two quadrants of her
right breast. of course she was on mega antibiotics and ordered NOT to nurse
on either side. We didn't know as much back then. She went on to nurse her
next 4 babies. With lactogenesis each time the lower quadrant filled,
engorged and then receded. She nursed her babies just fine, we figured with
one and a half breasts. The top half of the affected side functioned
normally. She never reported unresolved pain to me. I haven't got a clue
about your pt. with 6 mo old. It would seem that it should have resolved by
this point. But who knows what nerve damage is involved with 4 incisions.

Karen - I agree that rooming/bedding in solves the problem of exactly where
my new baby is at any given time. A long time ago (he's now a 27 y.o.
daddy). I delivered at a "rooming-in" hospital that took the baby to the
nursery for 1 hour each am for weighing, bath etc. I used to go watch him
and staff through the window. I had signs on the crib about severe familial
milk allergies. I just wanted to be sure! Personally, I can't wait for the
day that some parents sue over use of ABM. You can be sure that we'll all
see that the case is well publicized! The problem is that legally "proof"
of damage has to occur. A casual bottle doesn't usually cause measurable
damage, annoying, but not damaging. But I'm sure the case will eventually
happen. One hook might be abuse of informed consent. Hospitals are big on
that. They are putting something undesirable and unwanted into your infant.
They get permission for everything else. Maybe when a mom signs into labor
& delivery she can add a line to the consent form, saying "no ABM ". Then
if baby gets ABM she can inform the hospital that she intends to sue.
Threat of suit works good on the medical establishment. Oh well maybe
someday you will need an Rx for ABM.

Sincerely, Pat Young in NJ "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful
citizens can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has."
