Patricia, Thank you for your post. And your reminder of the many (known and
unknown) mothers and babies who have enjoyed the experience of
breastfeeding, with all that it brings, because I have done this work for 26
years, along with others of LLL and LC. I remember clearly the really
tough cases that we struggled with for weeks and even months, but sometimes
a woman whom I hardly remember will tell me of something I said that assured
her that she could trust her body to provide the best for her children.
These women had the determination and were ready for the teacher.
Once I was picking up photos at a film processing store and when I gave my
name, the woman behind me said, "You are Pat Gima? You helped me breastfeed
my baby five years ago and I am so grateful. With this baby here I had no
problems. I love breastfeeding!" This was a phone connection through LLL,
probably no more than half an hour.
All of these wonderful responses to my post let me know that you all do
understand why I was so agrieved. We know what they will miss. And if we
didn't believe that breastfeeding matters a lot we wouldn't be doing this
work. I feel deeply affirmed by your words and the sharing. And ready for
the next phone call on my business phone.
And, yes, we aren't responsible for what the culture has given us. I'm
trying to remember where I heard this great line. A man was being chastised
for not solving some large human problem. His response was, "Hey! Don't
blame me. I just got here!"
