Previously on Lactnet: Married mother with hx of cocaine use tested positive
on a tox screen for alcohol. Baby also tested positive for alcohol. Very
sleepy non-latching 11 day old with bilirubin slowly, slowly dropping from a
high of 18. Child Protective Services unconcerned as alcohol is not a
controlled substance. Next pedi appt not for weeks.
Update: At my not so gentle urging, the mother did take the baby in to see
the pediatrician that day. Unfortunately, the pedi on call did not have
access to the chart or the tox screen results. Baby pronounced healthy, but
sleepy.
Child Protective Services said the matter is closed. They would, however,
reopen the investigation if the pediatrician or someone else felt the child
was in danger.
The mom has moved back into her own home with her husband. Baby
breastfeeding most of the time. If she's too sleepy, they give her expressed
breastmilk. The mother seems happy and much more pulled together. I'm still
concerned about this baby. How many mothers bring alcohol with them to the
hospital to drink during labor? She was supposed to be NPO. This indicates
a real problem to me.
Any thoughts?
