I have a client who has an ulcer (gastrointestinal--not sure of exact
location) and is breastfeeding a 12 month old. Her doctor has advised her to
wean and has referred her to a gastroenterologist. She anticipates being
put on steroids for the ulcer (probably rectal suppositories). She does NOT
want to wean. She was advised to go on antidepressants and wean 2-3 months
ago and managed without the medication. She states that she may still go on
antidepressants after weaning. Breastfeeding is very important to her. Baby
now nurses 2-3 times a day. She wants to know if she can safely take
steroids while breastfeeding. Information on any other drug she might be
likely to be prescribed would also be helpful. She has access to a copy of
Briggs, and I have advised her to look there, but she would like all the
information she can get. Please e-mail me privately as I am currently NOMAIL
on Lactnet. Bonnie Jones, RN, ICCE, IBCLC
