Hi, fellow lactnetters
With the help of "Barney and Friends" and "Star Horse" (that movie about
Darth Yoda) I've managed to get the time to wade through a week's supply of
Lactnets and tell you a story about a pregnant woman who attended our LLL
meeting on Wednesday. She mentioned to me that she is a friend of my
neighbour, Kate. When I told Kate that her friend had come to the meeting
and seemed extremely enthusiastic and had even taken out LLL membership,
she was surprised. Kate is the mother of an 18 month old who has been
bottlefed since she was 3 weeks old - due to bad advice from the doctor and
clinic (she wasn't my neighbour then). She didn't know about the existence
of the two organisations that offer breastfeeding help to South African
mothers and is determined that none of her friends is going to fail for the
same reason. Earlier in this friend's pregnancy she asked her if she wanted
to breastfed. The reply was, "No, because my boobs are already big enough
and I'm not interested in that." "If you don't even try to breastfeed, then
don't talk to me and don't expect me to give you any advice if your child
is sick!" replied Kate and proceeded to tell her why she should
breastfeed".
Maybe vinegar is more acceptable when it comes from someone who's in that
situation - she's not perceived as a gung-ho nursing mother who's trying to
make everyone do the same as her. I personally prefer the honey approach,
though.
