Hi Pat
Great survey - I would be interested in seeing final results. The paper you
and everyone else on Lactnet NEEDS - is the paper presented at the ALCA
Conference last month by Denise Drane - "The Effects of Teats and Dummies on
Orofacial Development". It is also REQUIRED READING for anyone who has a
video of my ILCA presentation. My video is just "clinical observation data"
of her paper - which evaluates many of the "scientific" research articles on
the topic. The bibliography has excellent references.
I have personally talked with Denise and Dr. John Neil - who is currently
finishing up his video research on ultra sound imaging of breast and bottle
feeding. He also presented at the ALCA Conference. The video should be
ready for distribution next month. He has excellent "scientific"
documentation. I know of his conclusions but I will wait until he announces
them. I have encouraged him to join Lactnet.
The only difference, I believe, in their papers and my video is a little
terminology. Just interchange my terminology of "abnormal motor activity of
the tongue" and "tongue thrust" with their terminology of "piston-like" and
"up and down action" and you should not have any trouble going from the video
to their research and vice versa.
Denise does not have a computer yet, but I have faxed her requesting
permission to put her paper on the WWW for retrieval by everyone on Lactnet.
I do not have the capability of putting it on the web, but if some of you
have that capability, I would be happy to fax you a copy of her paper (12
pages) after I receive her permission.
We only see what we know, therefore we must know to serve!
Dr. Brian
