Hi everyone. An update about the mom that I have been working with that had
all of the problems. I finally convinced one of the military doctors
(OB/GYN) to culture her breastmilk. It came back with HEAVY growth of
Enterobacter Cloacae. I find this very fascinating. I talked to the
pathologist and he said that this is a "fermenting" type of bacteria, which
may explain the bubbles that this mom was expressing (some type of gas?).
The culture was sensitive to Bactrim, so this is what the mom was
prescribed. I was unable to convince them that she also needed Diflucan, but
they did give her a tube of Miconazole for her nipples and baby's bottom.
This bacteria is common in fecal matter so I am quite stumped as to how it
was growing in her breastmilk. The doctors conferred that this mom does not
need an ultrasound, and she is supposed to go back in and see them on Wed. I
was very concerned about sepsis with this mom since she had been sick for so
long, but her CBC was normal and she is no longer running fever. Thanks so
much for everyone that helped me through this esp. Kathy A., Linda Smith,
Linda Pohl, Trish Carrie and Trina Ammar. I am feeling better about this
diagnosis, although I still would have liked to see an ultrasound done.
Anyone that has had experience with this type of bacteria, please share....
