Kathy,
You've pulled me out of lurking for this one. I know for sure Ruth
Lawrence has some info. She basically says that it's o.k for milk to be
draining from the wound but it will heal slower. It seems to me that the
antibodies in breast milk would help keep bacteria out. One of the last
patients I dealt with had a similar condition. Her case wasn't as bad as
the one you describe. I never got to see her but talked on the phone
often with her. She contacted several Drs. all of whom had differing
opinions. A couple said wean, a couple said it would be fine to nurse,
one wanted to do lots of tests, and one said, "I don't know." The APL
for my area didn't have any additional info. I let her know all of the
information I had. She decided to continue nursing. She leaked the worst
during let-down. The wound did begin to heal and she never got any
infections. One thing this mother wanted from me was to hear that this
had happened to other women. Obviously since there is some research it
has. It helped her with her decision to continue breast feeding. Let us
all know how this case turns out.
