I have a question for my lactnut friends. I am in the process of rewriting
our bf policy and have gotten to a sticky part. Do you advocate teaching
the mom in the hosp to use both breasts each time if possible or do you
teach "finish first side first, no big deal if nurses on one breast at a time"?
I have searched through the info I have and can't get a good reference.
I've read Woolridge's stuff but that doesn't seem to apply to the colostrum
phase. Our policy now states "encourage feeding on both breasts each feed".
I personally feel that the baby should finish first breast first (without
being disturbed). This makes it simpler - less arbitrary clock watching and
it ensures that later on when the milk comes in, baby will get a chance to
get the hind milk preventing foremilk/hindmilk imbalance (Woolridge).
