Hi, I'm an RN and IBCLC working in the hospital setting, specifically labor
and delivery. I started out with LLL 20 years ago when I was pregnant with
my first child. I am currently a divorced mother of four and I stay quite
busy. I also, unfortunately, have Chronic Fatique Syndrome which, with the
onset of winter weather gets much worse. I have met with limited success in
the hospital in which I now work, having found on moving here that this town
is farther behind when it comes to breastfeeding , than the town I moved from
two years ago. We have Bristol Meyers in our town as a major employer so, as
you can imagine, the hospital is overrun with formula and associated freebie
pamphlets! . I feel rather isolated and useless here because, after working
with mothers for fifteen years, I am seldom consulted for breastfeeding
assistance. My present position in labor and delivery does not give me much
opportunity to help mothers except for the first time after birth. I was
originally hired to do some LC work and we were working on the Baby Friendly
Initiative, but that position was eliminated due to staff resistance to
change. I'm currently doing some things in the home health field and may
get the opportunity to follow that avenue more fully. I have found IN WIC
not to be as agressive as KY WIC in promoting breastfeeding and am surprised.
I had thought this was a federally-mandated focus ! I am really in need of
support and am ecstatic to finally have a computer so I can participate in
this forum. Keep the info coming! Oh, did I mention I'm back in school,
too? I'm too busy, even for me!
