Hi! I have some questions and concerns that I would like to share with you
and would appriciate any help or suggestions you might have. Is it possible
for a baby to be allergic to foods that the mother eats besides dairy
products. My peditrician says no and I am having trouble finding
documentation.
My son is 6 months old and exclusively BF. He has had colic starting at
about 10 days of age. He would cry for 3-5 hours every night arching his
back nothing could relieve him. I had difficulties with an over active let
down and found that pumping through let down did help the crying but it did
not totally resolve it. At 9 weeks I eleminated dairy including hidden
dairy. Things got better 3-4 hours 4-5 night a week. My son then developed
exzema on his elbows, knees and trunk. Some of the other reactions I observe
are a burn around the anus, stools that have stringy mucus and are frothy and
foul almost like GI bleed odor, an upper respiratory rattle, and fussy. I
went off soy, corn, eggs, nuts, anything with caffine and wheat. I slowly
added foods. Soy and wheat seem to be OK. Corn and eggs may be a problem.
I sometimes get reactions. I haven't tried nuts or caffine. The colic is
basically gone unless I make a diet error. Last week I wasn't thinking and
had a crust off of some bread that I made for my other son. The bread had
milk in it and I had 2 hours of crying, an exzema flare and frothy foul
stools.
My son was 6 lb 10 oz at birth, 12 lb at 2 months, 16 lb 3 oz at 4 months and
is now close to 20 lbs. Developmentally he is right on. When he is not
having a reaction my son is a happy easy going baby. There is a strong
family history of exzema on both sides of the family and multiple food
allergies.
This diet is very restrictive and doesn't always seem to work. I referred
myself to an allergist but have another 2 weeks until the appointment.
Your help is appriciated.
